There are numerous definition and easy to refute issues related in this definition. In any case, I recommend to give the significance of guide protege dependent on its root in folklore. History of Mentor The idea of tutoring can be followed from Greek folklore. In Odyssey of Odysseus, Mentor was the loyal friend of Odysseus, King of Ithaca who played a significant job for Telemachus, Odysseus’s child, when the King headed out to the Trojan wars. Mentor’s obligation was to raise Telemachus and get ready him as the replacement of Odyssey. As indicated by Samier (2000,p. 85), in light of Odyssey story, there are three major jobs in coaching: watchman, guide, and advisor. While Carruthers (1993,p. 9) clarify that in this story, Mentor had a job as a dad figure, an educator, a good example, a receptive advisor, a confided in consultant, a challenger, an encourager to Telemachus. Carruthers additionally include the figure with Athene, likewise from Greek folklore, who once in a while is accepted the type of tutor and went about as mother figure and shrewdness. Then again, defensive part of the job Mentor has raised the word â€Å"protege†, originate from French action word, proteger intends to secure. This word is utilized to an individual who gets tutor intrigue. Guide protege connections have become an example of learning or play a huge factor being developed of fruitful people along hundreds of years. Head and Gray gave a rundown of well known people with tutor protege relationship from Sir Thomas More until Michael Jackson (Carruthers,1993). This job of Mentor to help Odyssey’s replacement in his formative stage is utilized in numerous fields and at times in exceptionally basic manners. In this conversation, we center around administration in association that requirements understanding in reconciliation of scholarly and enthusiastic abilities of person. Coach Concept Although the idea of guide is genuine along history and appears to be basic and straightforward, during the time spent decide a definition, there are many differed sees originated from numerous creators. Carruthers(1993) clarified a scope of definition, from brief definition in Webster Universal Dictionary, ‘mentor is advocate, savvy and reasonable adviser’ and Carmin’s extensive meaning of coach, ‘mentoring is a perplexing, intelligent procedure happening between people of contrasting degrees of experience and aptitude which consolidates relational or psychosocial advancement, profession and additionally instructive turn of events, and socialization capacities into the relationship. To have a guide for this ‘mentor’ term, Carruthers(1993) suggested that most tutor understandings can be devided into two classifications: the first is which accentuate the expert improvement just, the second is which underscore proficient and self-awareness of the protege. In other field, term of tutor additionally utilized extensively and there are numerous far from being obviously true issues related with coach movement. Wood (1997,p.27) clarify tutor occurred in Mentor story is the possibility of a senior or more seasoned individual who focus on a more youthful individual and going about as a consultant and guide. She likewise asserts that coaching in the business world is happened when a lesser worker relegated a progressively senior consultant to assist them with building up their vocation. Samier (2000) states that qualities and translations of mentorship are rely upon one’s attitude humanistic or positivistic way. In his view, mentorship program can be viewed as a response to the negative impact of modernization which produces distance in social connection. To examine tutoring, it will require phenomenological and hermeneutic points of view on the grounds that the subject is relational relationship in proficient improvement which is emotional, representative and setting subordinate encounters. Mentorship likewise is viewed as a methods for tending to value issues by supporting ladies and minorities. His perspective on down to earth utilization of coaching additionally found in association, to be work as an inventive methods for supporting customary authoritative objectives and practices by offering a procedure for adapting to change. Perspectives engaged with Mentor Concept Samier (2000,p. 85) express that to develop a far reaching and away from system of tutoring, we have to look its job definition, normal for entertainers, character of relationship and common stages/stages. These coaching models comprise of: Mentoring is a multifaceted and complex job comprising of interventionist, preparing, and strong exercises; tutors are more established, progressively senior, and at a similar work environment or in a similar calling; the relationship is by and by and emotionally grounded, and administered by moral necessities of voluntarism and commonality, consequently not reducible to quantifiable measures; and it is a relationship which requires at least two years, and by and large three to five years, develop. To satisfy their jobs as guide and protege, there are a number rules or qualifying attributes which composed by Samier(2000,p. 88) into hierarchical status, expert and individual characteristics. In authoritative status, as indicated by Missirians’s study (1982, in Samier, 2000) coaches are viewed as splendid, charismatic, physically appealing, unfathomably vivacious, inventive, and rousing. The doll and the white rose

The doll and the white rose I was walking around in a Target store, when I saw a Cashier hand this little boy some money back. The boy couldnt have been more than 5 or 6 years old. The Cashier said, Im sorry, but you dont have enough money to buy this doll. Then the little boy turned to the old woman next to him: Granny, are you sure I dont have enough money? The old lady replied: You know that you dont have enough money to buy this doll, my dear. Then she asked him to stay there for just 5 minutes while she went to look a round. She left quickly. The little boy was still holding the doll in his hand. Finally, I walked toward him and I asked him who he wished to give this doll to. Its the doll that my sister loved most and wanted so much for Christmas. She was sure that Santa Claus would bring it to her. I replied to him that maybe Santa Claus would bring it to her after all, and not to worry. But he replied to me sadly. No, Santa Claus cant bring it to her where she is now. I have to give the doll to my mommy s o that she can give it to my sister when she goes there. His eyes were so sad while saying this. My Sister has gone to be with God. Daddy says that Mommy is going to see God very soon too, so I thought that she could take the doll with her to give it to my sister. My heart nearly stopped. The little boy looked up at me and said: I told daddy to tell mommy not to go yet. I need her to wait until I come back from the mall. Then he showed me a very nice photo of him where he was laughing. He then told me I want mommy to take my picture with her so she wont forget me. I love my mommy and I wish she doesnt have to leave me, but daddy says that she has to go to be with my little sister. Then he looked again at the doll with sad eyes, very quietly. I quickly reached for my wallet and said to the boy. Suppose we check again, just in case you do have enough money for the doll? OK he said, I hope I do have enough. I added some of my money to his without him seeing and we started to count it. There was enough for the doll and even some spare money. The little boy said: Thank you God for giving me enough money! Then he looked at me and added, I asked last night before I went to sleep for God to make sure I had enough money to buy this doll, so that mommy could give It to my sister. He heard me! I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my mommy, but I didnt dare to ask God for too much. But He gave me enough to buy the doll and a white rose. My mommy loves white roses.A few minutes later, the old lady returned and I left with my basket. I finished my shopping in a totally different state from when I started. I couldnt get the little boy out of my mind. Then I remembered a local news paper article two days ago, which mentioned a drunk man in a truck, who hit a car occupied by a young woman and a little girl. The little girl died right away, and the mother was left in a critical state. The family had to decide whether to pull the plug on the life-sustaining machine, because the young woman would not be able to recover from the coma. Was this the family of the little boy? Two days after this encounter with the little boy, I read in the news paper that the young woman had passed away. I couldnt stop myself as I bought a bunch of white roses and I went to the funeral home where the body of the young woman was exposed for people to see and make last wishes before her burial. She was there, in her coffin, holding a beautiful white rose in her hand with the photo of the little boy and the doll placed over her chest. I left the place, teary-eyed, feeling that my life had been changed forever. The love that the little boy had for his mother and his sister is still, to this day, hard to imagine. And in a fraction of a second, a drunk driver had taken all this away from him.The value of a man or woman resides in what he or she gives, not in what they are capable of receivingAuthor Unknown

Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1536 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2017/06/26 Category Finance Essay Type Narrative essay Did you like this example? The meaning of merger which is combination of two or more firms, in which the objectives are enhanced and increase shareholders wealth, increase company profit and allow the company move into a rapidly growing market place. Maxis Communication Berhad (MCB) leading the mobile provider and has mostly subscribers in Malaysia, The company provides mobile, fixed line telephony, data and network services and also a largest IPO ever in Malaysia and South East Asia. Although MCB having a strong financial background, but its competitor which are Celcom Berhad and Digi Telecommunication also considered as a very strong background and advantages competitor, how to prevent exceed by those company? Our suggestion for the MCB is merger with the Airsia (Malaysia low-cost airlines). Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Maxis Communication Berhad Merger With Airasia Finance Essay" essay for you Create order Airasia operates scheduled domestic and international flights and is Asias largest low-fare, no-frills airline. These mergers are considering as conglomerate merger which means combination of company in unrelated business. We choose Airasia as a target, because Airasia has keep growing around the Asia and it been chooses become a Worlds Best Low-Cost Airline for 2009. According our research, Airasia are also finding more subsidiary and partnership to expand their business, which does will be an opportunity for MCB as well and the key benefit of that merger is ability reduce risk by MCB. Unfortunately, Airasia are still under a huge debt, but that become the main motive why we suggestion that MCB merger with it, because of tax consideration are a key motive for merging. Under that situation, will increase profit and increase shareholders wealth of MCB as well. Beside that, because of Airasia have a strong management team, which teams can keep minimize net loss of capital and maximi ze profit at a same time, operation their borrowing asset well and keep growing under the situation of debt. Strength From our suggestion, if MCB successfully merger with Airasia, it definitely bring much advantages than the disadvantages such as because of Airasia brands name, it will easily make advertising for the MCB. Regarding the MCB perspective, they are keeping advertising about their product which is broadband, 3G network, Iphone package, postpaid, prepaid and so on. Because of those advertising for the product, according for the MCB annual report mentioned that under the sales and marketing parts, it cost around 4.6% from their of revenue driven by year-end promotions, although it does not costly than other, but if MCB merger with airasia, they can saves those expenses for expands business or doing investment on the future. Because of Airasia brands name are well establishment in Asia pacific and advantages, strong brand name recognition of global market by organization, and Airasia are highly frequency linked with country such as Brunei, Cambonia, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, India, Ira n, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Australia and so on, it will bring the benefit and increase reputation, brand name recognition of MCB. It easily makes advertising through their aircraft. At a same time, it will increase MCBs recognition by other organization with under a very rapidly growing market situation than other strongest competitor. Furthermore, successfully merger between the both companies, MCB will continuously become the strong leading mobile phone service provider in Malaysia, and Airasia will become a leading airline industry in Asia. Those will have a strongly financial background, will attract more investor to do investment and attract more people using Maxis network. In addition, MCB will have good potential increase managerial skill and technology from Airasia, because of their stronger management team. From Airasia perspective, company merger will enhance their fund-raising ability, company may be unable to obtain funds for its own internal expansion beca use of highly debt background but to obtain funds for external from (MCB) combination, and because of MCB has high liquid asset and low level of liabilities, it considered benefit for Airasia as well, it immediately decreasing financial leverage and allow funds to be raised externally at lower cost and reduce their debt in the future. These reasons mentioned that Airasia must accept suggestion merger by MCB. Weakness Although if merger with Airasia will bring along of advantages and benefit, but also does to consideration about the disadvantages for the merger. MCB can control significantly larger amount of assets than could acquire through merger, but major disadvantages of MCB which will increase risk resulting of the leverage effect, and must be pay attention that Airasia are having the bigger amount of debt on the future in 12 years repayment period, MCB may help Airasia covers its debt on that moments which means MCB immediately having debt at a same time. In addition, if MCB successfully merger with Airasia, it will become difficult to analyze by the MCB, and investor of MCB have difficulty understanding because of these complexity. In addition, effect of a merger on the earning per share of the MCB initial decrease in the per-share earnings of stock is expected. MCB will sell at low earning per share, its shareholders value may suffer of that merger at a short-term period. So, we define this merger as a long-term investment by MCB. From financial perspective, higher risks are higher return, thats why we suggest that MCB merger with Airasia, although these have few disadvantages. Opportunities According the annual report by the Airasia, we know that Airasia are still under the huge amount of debt. The tax loss can be applied against a limited amount of future income of the MCB, that is a consideration by the purpose of merger, if successfully merger with Airasia, it will bring a lot of benefit and after-tax earning by reducing the taxable income of the MCB. Although Airasia having a huge debt, but they have a strong management team which are control their debt as well. As the information, we know that borrowings of AirAsia are all in USD, it will benefit from the depreciation of USD because of this recent years economics crisis, USD are getting depreciation day by day, Airasia may having the foreign exchange gain from the repayment of debt. However, the foreign exchange gains just an accounting gain, which wont generate any real cash flow or economic value. Furthermore, fast expansion of AirAsia, leveraging on financing facilities, is one of the factors that enable AirAs ia to maintain its profitability in the highly competitive airlines industry. Regarding the economics of the world this few years, only the lowest cost player through effectively cost reduction, economic scale, and growing market place will survive. Those reasons are become the main purpose why MCB needs merger with them and we feel that Airasia are getting growing with rapidly, and way of expansion which are through borrowings instead of issuing new shares is the best way to benefit the shareholders as well. From MCB perspectives, maybe can follow their way and management to increase asset by borrowing from others although include the interest, but MCB will have more cash flow in hand, it can be use for expand business by highly return area or diversification investment. Beside that, Although the earnings per share of Airasia is quite low, RM 20.6, compare to the MCB earnings per share, RM 27.25, it allow investors believe that this merger will increase the wealth of the shareholde rs due to the high value of both companies in the market now on the future. Those reasons are becomes the way to keep growing and expands the businesses of MCB. Threat From Airasia perspectives, increasing competition because of increasing number of low cost airline competitors, and aggressive competition against the large or traditional airline companies under airlines industry such as Malaysian Airlines (MAS). Those threats will directly affect Airasia performances, profit, advantages, and indirectly affect to the holding company which is MCB as well. These are the problem that MCB must consideration after merger with Airasia. In addition, monitoring the foreign currency and adjust the profit against non-operating income are the important, because of exchange currency may cause company having the debt or gain. After MCB merger with Airasia, if MCB unable to pay Airasias liabilities, will cause both of them faced the challenge and seriously problem to become merger failure. Conclusion As a conclusion, we strongly suggest that MCB merger with Airasia. Because of those benefit are highly exceed the disadvantages of the merger. If successfully merger, MCB will have advantages of competitive between Celcom and Digi and other telecommunication network. As our information, because recent months, Celcom and Digi are plans to explore long-term network and infrastructure collaboration in Malaysia which are sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). They plan to corporation; it will threaten to MCB position in Malaysia. Thats why MCB must prepare himself and merging the target which are Airasia. Mainly reason that merger is about the tax loss carryforward for the MCB. The tax loss can be applied against a limited amount of future income of the MCB over 12years (Airasia debt period) or until the total tax loss has been fully recovered. MCB using those tax loss carryforward to expand its business at a same time. Beside that, increasing managerial skill or technology, and a dvertising through airline, those reason become the situation why MCB needs merger with Airasia. Furthermore, increasing profit on the long-term perspectives as well and because of its more pros than cons.

Harriet Martineauâ€Biography and Works

Born in 1802 in England, Harriet Martineau is considered to be one of the earliest sociologists, a self-taught expert in political economic theory  who wrote prolifically throughout her career about the relationship between politics, economics, morals, and social life. Her intellectual work was grounded in a staunchly moral perspective that was influenced by her Unitarian faith (although she would later become an atheist). She spoke out against slavery and was fiercely critical as well of the inequality and injustice faced by girls, women, and the working poor. As one of the first women journalists of the era, she also worked as a translator, speechwriter, and novelist. Her acclaimed fiction invited readers to consider the pressing social issues of the day.  She was known for her keen ability to explain complicated ideas in an easy-to-understand manner, presenting many of her theories about politics, economics, and society in the form of appealing and accessible stories. Early Life   Harriet Martineau was born in 1802 in Norwich, England. She was the sixth of eight children born to Elizabeth Rankin and Thomas Martineau. Thomas owned a textile mill, and Elizabeth was the daughter of a sugar refiner and grocer, making the family economically stable and wealthier than most British families at the time. The Martineaus were descendants of French Huguenots who fled Catholic France for Protestant England. They were practicing  Unitarians  and instilled the importance of education and critical thinking in all of their children. However, Elizabeth was also a strict believer  in traditional gender roles, so while the Martineau boys went to college, the girls did not and were expected to learn domestic work instead. This would prove to be a formative life experience for Harriet, who bucked all traditional gender expectations and wrote extensively about gender inequality. Self-Education, Intellectual Development, and Work Martineau was a voracious reader from a young age,  was well read in  Thomas Malthus  by the time she was 15, and had already become a political economist at that age, by her own recollection. She wrote and published her first written work, â€Å"On Female Education,† in 1821 as an anonymous author. This piece was a critique of her own educational experience  and how it was formally stopped when she reached adulthood. When her father’s business failed in 1829, she decided to earn a living for her family  and became a working writer. She wrote for the  Monthly Repository, a Unitarian publication, and published her first commissioned volume,  Illustrations of Political Economy, funded by publisher Charles Fox, in 1832. These illustrations were a monthly series that ran for two years, in which Martineau critiqued the politics and economic practices of the day by presenting illustrated tellings of the ideas of Malthus,  John Stuart Mill,  David Ricardo, and  Adam Smith. The series was designed as a tutorial for the general reading audience. Martineau won prizes for some of her essays, and the series sold more copies than did the work of Dickens at the time. Martineau argued that tariffs in early American society only benefited the rich and hurt the working classes both in the U.S. and in Britain. She also advocated for the Whig Poor Law reforms, which shifted assistance to the British poor from cash donations to the workhouse model. In her early years as a writer, she advocated for free market economic principles in keeping with the philosophy of Adam Smith. Later in her career, however, she advocated for government action to stem inequality and injustice, and is remembered by some as a social reformer due to her belief in the progressive evolution of society. Martineau broke with Unitarianism in 1831 and adopted the philosophical position of freethinking, whose adherents seek truth based on reason, logic, and empiricism, rather the dictates of authority figures, tradition, or religious dogma. This shift resonates with her reverence for  August Comtes positivistic sociology and her belief in progress. In 1832 Martineau moved to London, where she circulated among leading British intellectuals and writers, including Malthus, Mill,  George Eliot,  Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Thomas Carlyle. From there she continued to write her political economy series until 1834. Travels Within the United States When the series was completed,  Martineau traveled to the U.S. to study the young nation’s political  economy and moral structure, much as  Alexis de Tocqueville  had done. While there, she became acquainted with  Transcendentalists  and abolitionists, and with those involved in education for girls and woman. She later published  Society in America,  Retrospect of Western Travel,  and  How to Observe Morals and Manners—considered her first publication based on sociological research—in which she not only criticized the state of education for women but also expressed her support for the abolition of slavery due to its immorality and economic inefficiency as well as its impact on the working classes in the U.S. and in Britain. As an abolitionist, Martineau sold embroidery in order to donate to the cause and also worked as the English correspondent for the  American Anti-Slavery Standard  through the end of the American Civil War. Contributions to Sociology Martineau’s key contribution to the field of sociology was her assertion that when studying society, one must focus on all aspects of it. She emphasized the importance of examining political, religious, and social institutions. By studying society in this way, she felt, one could deduce why inequality existed, particularly that faced by girls and women. In her writings, she brought an early feminist perspective to bear on issues such as race relations, religious life, marriage, children, and home (she herself never married or had children). Her social theoretical perspective was often focused on the moral stance of a populace and how it did or did not correspond to the social, economic, and political relations of its society. Martineau measured progress in society by three standards: the status of those who hold the least power in society, popular views of authority and autonomy, and access to resources that allow the realization of autonomy and moral action. She won numerous awards for her writing  and though controversial, was a rare example of a successful and popular working woman writer of the Victorian era. She published over 50 books and over 2,000 articles in her lifetime. Her translation into English and revision of  Auguste Comte’s  foundational sociological text,  Cours de Philosophie Positive, was received so well by readers and by Comte himself that he had Martineau’s English version translated back to French. Period of Illness and Impact on Her Work Between 1839 and 1845, Martineau became housebound due to a uterine tumor. She moved out of London to a more peaceful location for the duration of her illness. She continued to write extensively during this time but due to her recent experiences shifted her focus to medical topics. She published Life in the Sickroom, which challenged the domination/submission relationship between doctors and their patients—and was viciously criticized by the medical establishment for doing so. Travels in North Africa and the Middle East In 1846, her health restored, Martineau embarked on a tour of Egypt, Palestine, and Syria. She focused her analytic lens on religious ideas and customs and observed that religious doctrine was increasingly vague as it evolved. This led her to conclude, in her written work based on this trip—Eastern Life, Present and Past—that humanity was evolving toward atheism, which she framed as rational, positivist progress. The atheistic nature of her later writing, as well as her advocacy for mesmerism, which she believed cured her tumor and the other ailments she had suffered, caused deep divisions between her and some of her friends. Later Years and Death In her later years, Martineau contributed to the Daily News and the radical leftist Westminster Review. She remained politically active, advocating for women’s rights during the 1850s and 60s. She supported the Married Women’s Property Bill, the licensing of prostitution and legal regulation of customers, and women’s suffrage. She died in 1876 near Ambleside, Westmorland, in England, and her autobiography was published posthumously in 1877. Martineaus Legacy Martineau’s sweeping contributions to social thought are more often than not overlooked within the canon of classical sociological theory, though her work was widely lauded in its day, and preceded that of  Ãƒâ€°mile Durkheim  and  Max Weber. Founded in 1994 by Unitarians in Norwich and with support from Manchester College, Oxford, The Martineau Society in England holds an annual conference in her honor. Much of her written work is in the public domain and available for free at the Online Library of Liberty, and many of her letters are available  to the public via the British National Archives. The Aging Process And Key Diseases Associated With Aging

This paper will discuss the relationship between the aging process and key diseases associated with aging. Examples of aging-associated diseases include cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative diseases (Là ³pez-Otà n, Blasco, Partridge, Serrano, Kroemer, 2013, p. 1194). Of these, we will discuss in-depth recent studies that have linked aging with Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. These diseases affect a significant proportion of the population over the age of 65 and place a considerable burden on the American health care system. Therefore, a better understanding of how they are related to aging and each other can result in the adoption of innovative treatments and declined risk for older adults. In order to better understand aging-associated diseases, it is first necessary to define what aging is. Aging is a complex, multifactorial process of harmful mutations in cells and tissues that are accumulated over time and result in an increased risk of disease and, eventually, death (Tosato, Zamboni, Ferrini, Cesari, 2007, p. 401). Contrary to the belief that aging can be cured through medical advances, it is scientifically accepted that, while human life expectancy has increased, the human life span has remained largely unchanged for the past 100,000 years (Tosato et al., p. 401). Therefore, future developments in aging research ought to focus on addressing treatment and prevention of major aging-associated diseases that willShow MoreRelatedHealth Care For Chronically Ill Individuals1447 Words   |  6 Pagesidentify the key factors in healthy aging and longevity. Hemingway Essay Research Paper NonFiction Book ReportThe free essay sample

Hemingway Essay, Research Paper Non-Fiction Book Report The book Ernest Hemingway and his universe was written by Anthony Burgess and it was published in 1978 by Charles Scribners Sons. Its chief construct is about the life of Ernest Hemingway and how he differed from his fellow authors in being a really strong adult male of action. There are many scenes in the book because Ernest Hemingway was a adult male who traveled all his life to all of the United States, Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and several other topographic points. The writer describes what Hemingway would make in each of these topographic points and what the effects caused by his actions were. The first scene is in Oak Park Illinois, this is where Ernest Hemingway is born on July 21, 1899. When he grows up, Ernest goes to war in Europe and after that he comes back and moves to Chicago, which is where he marries Hadley Richardson. We will write a custom essay sample on Hemingway Essay Research Paper NonFiction Book ReportThe or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page After they get married, they move to Canada where Hemingway # 8217 ; s boy is born. When he finds himself unhappy, he divorces Hadley and moves to Paris where he meets and marries Pauline Pfeiffer, after a short period of clip, he divorces her and marries Mary Welsh in Havana. In 1953 he goes to a campaign in Africa and has a serious accident, which leaves him ill for the remainder of his yearss. At his last place in Ketchum, Idaho, on a Sunday forenoon on July 2, 1961, Ernest Miller Hemingway commits self-destruction. The writer shows all the chief struggles that Hemingway goes through. I wonder how he knew such personal inside informations about Hemingway # 8217 ; s life cognizing that he was ever a really pri vate individual. It is shown how Ernest is ever treated by as a babe by his ma and how he neer forgives her for his humiliation. When he was in high school he would sometimes acquire in problem for utilizing out words in the school paper. He would make this merely to make a commotion. The writer lets us cognize how Hemingway # 8217 ; s bosom is broken when a nurse he falls in love with, rejects him for another adult male. He besides lets us see that Ernest is a really insensitive individual when he leaves his married woman and boy for another adult female, and this 1 for his 3rd, and so eventually 4th married woman. This shows how unstable Ernest is. He becomes so unstable that he takes his ain life when he can # 8217 ; t manage all his jobs. Burgess seemingly wants the populace to see how Hemingway lived an adventuresome life and even though he ever looked and acted really manfully, he had a really confusing life and this likely explains why he didn # 8217 ; t fear decease, particularly his ain. He besides compares how Ernest takes much of his plot line from his novel, A Farewell to Arms, from his personal experiences. The chief character of the book experiences many of the same state of affairss Hemingway faced. Some of these similarities are exact while some are less similar, and some events have a wholly different result. I think that Anthony Burgess does a good occupation in this life because he lets the public see all the inside informations of Ernest Hemingway # 8217 ; s success and failures. I liked reading about Hemingway # 8217 ; s life because it was really interesting and I wouldn # 8217 ; t mind reading one of his celebrated books like A Farewell to Arms or Death in the Afternoon.

Mary Jane essays

Mary Jane essays Legalization and or decriminalization of marijuana has been sought after, unsuccessfully, for the last 62 some-odd years by an ever-growing number of people. These people stem from all walks of life from high school kids to top-level business executives to doctors to musicians and actors to senators and politicians. The topic, however, is one that has been tiptoed around since the reefer madness disease swept across mainstream America in the late 1930s. All of which was the brainchild of two men: Harry Anslinger, the head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics at the time and who happened to be related to someone on the board of Dupont, and William Randolph Hearst, who owned a few large newspaper companies. Both of whom are said to be paid off by Dupont, who was very big in the wood-pulp paper industry, and would profit heavily from hemp being outlawed. Marijuana had many uses in our society before reefer madness came to a head. For over 150 years, the second-most prescribed medication in America was a highly concentrated cannabis extract. According to a February 1938 article in Popular Mechanics, a machine called the decoriator could take 1 acre devoted to the cultivation of hemp and out produce 4 acres of traditional wood-based paper, at 1/5 the pollution. Most of the rigging and canvas sails on ships, even through the latter part of the 20th century, were made from hemp. Even the word canvas is Dutch for cannabis. Also, a synthetic compound very similar to PVC can be made from hemp. We are beginning to look towards alternate fuel sources to run our future machines. I say that there is nothing better than cannabis. It can be converted to methane, methanol or gasoline at a fraction of the cost of oil, coal, or nuclear energy. The oil from the seeds can be made into a high quality lubricant that could replace petrol oils completely. Unfortunately, i ...

International Trade Between China And Canada Essay

International Trade Between China And Canada - Essay Example Priority sectors for this trade mission included agriculture and agri-food, information and communications technologies, aerospace, biotechnology, education, natural resources, transportation, financial services and tourism. The People's Republic of China (excluding the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region) is Canada's fourth largest export market. In 2005, Canada's total merchandise exports to China amounted to $7.1 billion, an increase of 6% over 2004. Total merchandise imports from China increased to $29.5 billion in 2005, up 22% over 2004. In 2003 (the last year for which statistics are available), Canada exported $754 million in services to China. The rapid recent growth of manufacturing in China has made it an increasingly important player in global supply chains. (Franks 30) Canada was a strong supporter of China's membership in the WTO. Canada's market access agreement with China, signed in 1999, took effect in December 2001 when China joined the organization. China's accession to the WTO in December 2001, and its ongoing process of implementing WTO commitments, opens up new opportunities in trade and investment for Canadian companies, for example, in the transportation equipment, financial and business services sectors. The agreement commits China to lower tariffs for Canadian goods and increased access to Chinese markets for Canadian service providers. Several projects sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) are providing Chinese policy makers with advice on managing the transition to an open, rules based economic system. Canada and China established diplomatic relations in 1970. In October 1973, Pierre Elliott Trudeau was the first Canadian prime minister to officially visit China. This year marks the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations. Since 1994, Canadian and Chinese ministers, Canadian provincial leaders and Chinese governors have been making several visits to each other's country every year. in September 2004 Canada and China resumed stalled negotiations in Beijing to develop a Canada-China bilateral investment treaty (also called a foreign investment protection and promotion agreement by Canadian officials),aimed to open up the investment gates and encourage direct investment in each others markets,. In January 2005, Prime Minister Martin visited China and Hong Kong, as a business delegation led by the Minister of International Trade. A joint action plan related to the Canada-China Strategic Working Group was released on that occasion. Later, in September 2005, Chinese President Hu Jin Tao visited Canada, and several agreements facilitating bilateral trade were signed. Canada's International Policy Statement, released in April 2005, recognizes China's growing global influence and articulates a new government-wide priority to broaden and deepen our engagement with China. Canada's relationship with China is evolving into a multi-faceted and increasingly interdependent partnership. Trade and investment between two countries China is Canada's second largest source of imported goods, with imports equaling $29.5 billion in 2005, more than the combined value of third and fourth place Japan and Mexico. WOMEN'S ROLE IN HISTORY FROM 1700 THROUGH PRESENT, THEIR SOCIAL CHANGE Essay

WOMEN'S ROLE IN HISTORY FROM 1700 THROUGH PRESENT, THEIR SOCIAL CHANGE TO SOCIETY - Essay Example That is, defying the traditional gender roles which are unanimously acknowledged by a patriarchal society, women have entered into male spheres and performed those male activities quite successfully. A critical analysis of the history of the changes in women’s role will necessarily reveal that these changes were, for the first time, induced during the Enlightenment Period in Europe. During that age, women were considered as mentally and physically weak. They were thought to be fit for indoor jobs such childrearing, maintaining house and hearth, cooking, washing, etc. Though women were excluded from public affairs and outdoor activities, Enlightenment scholars like Mary Wollstonecraft called for changes in the prejudiced view about women (Kreis, 2012, pars. 3). But during the early 18th century, public awareness about women’s education began to increase in the metropolitan areas of England and France. They started to participate in French Salons increasingly (Goodman, 19 94, p. 43). In public affairs, they appeared most as singers, though not professionals. But during the late 18th century, the epoch-making event, Industrial Revolution, seemed to change the whole scenario about women’s traditional role as a wife and a mother. Before the Industrial Revolution, men’s and women’s social role were highly distinctive. In a family, men were mainly considered as the breadwinner and women were dependent on their male counterparts for their bread and butter. But the Revolution, technology-based industries began to burgeon at a rapid rate, creating more opportunities for women to be involved in earning activities, as Hudson (2011) notes, â€Å"Many young people, especially young women, migrated to towns and cities in search of work as the possibilities of agricultural employment declined.† (pars. 5). During the Enlightenment period, women’s outdoor was limited to cultivation. Most the

Team And Leadership Effectiveness In The Workplace

Team And Leadership Effectiveness In The Workplace Leadership is defined as the process of influencing the activities of an individual or a group in efforts toward goal achievement in a given situation. In essence, leadership involves accomplishing goals with and through people (Hersey and Blanchard, 1993). Leaders envisage the future; they motivate organisation members and impart values-whether they are concerned for honesty, hard work, quality and taking calculated risk or concern for customers and employees. It seems there is no common definition of leadership , perhaps it is because the leadership concept is complicated and fuzzy. According to Robert Tannenbaum, Irving R. Weschler and Fred Massarik leadership is defined as interpersonal influence exercised in a situation and directed, through the communication process, toward the attainment of a specialized goal or goals. Leadership is about showing the way, by going in advance, and influencing the behaviour of others. It refers to introducing new business behaviour, practices, o r technologies, which demonstrate that sustainable development is possible (Sommer, 2003) Todays business leaders have identified two important factors that could drive success in organisations of world class cadre- continually enhancing performance by becoming faster, better and more effective, and including all employees in Performance improvement can be achieved only by enhancing the processes within an organisation. Since the processes are created and operated by the people, the only way to enhance performance would be through people. Therefore continuous effective improvement depends on the capability of managers to guarantee that each and every one becomes involved in enhancing performance, work efficaciously in teams in order to analyse processes, and study problems to implement solutions. Leadership Under the leadership of Mr. Narayan Murthy, the ex-chairman of the Infosys, the company has ended up being one of the most successful IT companies in the world. Infosys Technologies Ltd is one of the leading IT companies In India and worldwide. It is now a global leader in the Next Generation of IT and Consulting. Starting in 1981, Infosys witnessed its corporate success in a short time. Although the company started functioning almost twenty five years ago, it is in the recent times that it experienced strong growth. Ever since it started the company has had a remarkable growth in terms of revenue. Revenue in 1994 was only US$9.5million but in 2005 Infosys revenue touched US$2billion which was only half this revenue in 2004. There is a saying that Great companies can neither be built nor their greatness sustained without great leaders, the above results clearly proves that Mr. Murthy is one such great leader who lead the company to the success path. According to the Hay group review, a global management consulting firm, of 1249 leaders from prominent organisations functioning in the Indian market, about 60% create a de-motivating climate and do not employ those who can lead. It also found only 18% develop an engaging climate that promotes high performance. So today it is so very much necessary for many organisations to create motivating climate and engage people who can lead effectively. The successful organisation has one major attribute that sets it apart from unsuccessful organisations: dynamic and effective leadership (Hersey and Blanchard, 1993). Infosys took an initiative in this direction and opened Infosys leadership institute where it intends to grow leaders. The Leadership development program at Infosys Leadership Institute targets to produce a collective pool of leaders and shape them to take on present and future challenges in business. The Infosys Leadership Institute offers a wide range of organisational and individual development sessions to expound business problems. At Infosys they believe that a good leader can be only one who uses all different styles of leadership with one of them usually dominating and a bad leader is one who sticks to one style. At Infosys it is not that only the top management gives suggestions to support its vision and manage agility, uncertainty and ambiguity at all circumstances. Courtesy: http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/swami_lalita-161501-infosys-leadership-ob-education-ppt-powerpoint/ The leadership believes in taking valuable suggestions from its young achievers in the company. The Chairman diagnosed that young achievers in the company were wavering to come forth with their ideas. These people had a great value to add to the company but could not give in to the discussions feeling in secured of infracting hierarchy. Mr. Murthy communicated to be open minded and encouraged the young achievers to speak. He found that the suggestions and thoughts given by them had a lot of substance and can significantly help the company. The leaders at Infosys are so very much adaptable, bothered significantly over the above issue they built a leadership institute where they can develop and groom leaders from its promising employees irrespective of the hierarchy and provide them the opportunity to help build the company. Today many organisations are facing talent problem, where people are being rushed into activities they are unaware of or assigned to jobs for which they have inadequate preparations. Due to the phenomenal growth of India in last 5 to 10 years people were getting promoted before their time and these people held a wrong perception of empowerment. Even though they had the authority, they lacked in terms of experience and credence to be true leaders. If organisations have to maintain conservative growth estimates, much of todays leaders need to motivate the employees who work for them. If not able to successfully motivate, it would be difficult to keep employees sticking around long enough to progress them into competent leaders. So it becomes very important to have motivating climate in any company in order to enhance its own performance. According to Hersey and Blanchard(1993), in leading or influencing there are three competencies of Leadership: Diagnosing-being able to understand the situation you are trying to influence, Adapting-being able to adapt your behaviour and other resources you have available to meet the contingencies of the situation, Communicating-being able to communicate in a way that people can easily understand and accept. The soul of leadership competencies in Infosys rest in their vision statement which reads as: We will be a globally respected corporation that provides best of breed business solutions, leveraging technology, delivered by best in Class people. To achieve their vision, leadership competencies have been marked along four dimensions: Work, people, technology and business. Each of these is further exaggerated into smaller functional terms in the graphic shown below. Courtesy: http://www.thehindu.com/businessline/praxis/pr0304/03040380.pdf The Infosys leadership institutes primary goal is to assist the company to counter the explicit challenges of now and in the future. They believe that by improving the quality of leadership they can handle its phenomenal growth, with stand the complexities of the market and swiftly changing environment, and through thought leadership they can develop higher customer value. Courtesy: http://www.thehindu.com/businessline/praxis/pr0304/03040380.pdf At Infosys in order to increase their quality of leadership they use a Nine pillar model of leadership development. At Infosys, for leadership development these nine pillars are functional elements. For the development of leadership competencies at discrete level each pillar has its own distinct importance. 360-degree appraisal: It is method of consistently collecting data about an individuals performance and potential from a broad range of co-workers. This may include the manager, direct reportees, peers and both internal and external customers. It is an organised method of gathering and processing data and gives the employee an opportunity to express on his valuable information. The response received from 360-degree feedback is used as a foundation to direct the person in gaining new skills and improving existing skills all arranged to the leadership competencies model. Development assignments: They are a traditional and powerful form of leadership development. Potential employees are allowed to have experience in various functions through Cross functional assignments and internal job rotations. Development assignments help an employee to gain practical leadership skills outside their zone of experience. Development relationships: Mentoring is viewed as a developmental relationship in the framework of leadership development. In order to transfer and share knowledge and experience, one-on-one relationships in work scenes are facilitated. This mentoring for leadership program is functional and learning from this course will be utilized to refine and broaden the element of leadership development throughout the organisation. Leadership skills training: It is a process by which individuals in the organisation go through a sequence of learning interventions on matter relevant to leadership. A Leaders teach series was formed in which the board of directors including the chairman, the Managing director, and the Chief Executive Officer hold a workshop with help of leadership institute faculty for the development of future leaders. Feedback Intensive program: These are comprehensive behavioural interventions based on informal and formal feedback taken from people that the individual interfaces with. These programs are structured in a way that individuals give and receive feedback in an environment that is non-threatening and could generate a workable plan for goal setting for progressive professional and personal development. Action Learning: It is a real time experience which is time based used to crack systematic, unresolved and real organisational problems. It is termed as a pragmatic process directed at producing a resolution a problem that has been identified by the organisation and a workable plan is designed for goal setting and strategies for progressive development to attain them. Systematic process Learn: It is an intervention that will enable individuals to view the organisation as system in whole which consists of many interacting sub systems. It is intended to yield plan for continuous advancement in systematic processes and details as to how a participant will initiate such an improvement. John’s father was called Pickens and Emma was his mother and he was their fourth born child. The family was not well of financially they just lived in poverty. In spite of the poverty that engulfed the family, John’s father turned to be a habitual drunkard who cared less for his family. However, Emma John’s mother was a devoted religious woman who struggled to take care of the children with less support from her husband (Watson, 1999). In 1891, Pickens John’s father left the family and disappeared since he was somebody who engaged in extra marital affairs with other women a situation which even strained their marriage with his wife Emma and the relationship with his children. When Pickens had disappeared from home, John became a naughty boy and he became so confused in life due to lack of the full p arental care of both parents. He became defiant at school even he did not want to listen to the advice from his teachers. He bullied his fellow students and involved in other antisocial behaviors which were quite unacceptable at the school environment, further more he became violent and even rebelled his mother. Advantages and Disadvantages of Video Games Essay

Everybody knows something about Super Mario or Pac-Man. These two and some others have started a new trend which called ‘playing video games’. Most people have spent their free time with playing video games and it still keeps going in that way. But for years people asking this question. ‘Do video games are bad or good? ‘ One of the advantages of playing video games is improving your vocabulary. Most games are online now and you can’t do anything without making a contact with other players. These players are live in another countries and the only way to communicate with them is using a common language. 90% this is English. I’m playing video games and i can say that video games really improves your vocabulary skills. When you don’t understand a word in a game you have to check dictionary to understand the meaning of it. To be honest,I have learnt a lot of words from video games. Actually more than my English lesson in highschool. Another advantage of playing video games is improving computer skills. Sometimes you have to set some options to play your game better. While doing that you learn about your computer’s hardware too. For example:there is a part in options called ‘graphics’. You have to use a better graphic card to see better images. To get a better graphic card, first you have to know how we can compare them and by that we learn more and more about our computer’s system. But of course there are disadvantages too. One of the is it’s harmful for your eyes and other body parts. I know there are some games which you can play by Nintendo Wii or PlayStation Move. They give you some kind of camera and your moves can be seen in game. But it’s unnecessary to do something like that. There are lots of sports which you can do outside. You can go on a jogging or play basketball, tennis etc. You don’t have to do this by playing video games. Another disadvantage is that, sometimes children access games which are not proper to their age and that is harmful for children. But I think the problem is not games are too reachable. The problem is parents are don’t care enough about their children. What I mean is you can’t ban something global but you can limit them. And it’s not so hard to do it. Maybe you can limit the internet or you can use some kind of programme like Family Security System. But these are the things which you can made with using a computer. Also you can stop your children with spend more time with them. Then they can feel video games are not the most important thing in the world. In conclusion there are bad and good sides of video games. But some other things have good and bad effects too like TV or food. If you don’t become and addict I think all of them are useful. You have to control yourself and your time to don’t become and addict. All is up to you.

The Family Gathering At The Russell Family - 889 Words

It was the Russell family gathering. It happened every summer on July 18, like clockwork. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and even second or third cousins showed up. Little girls with grass-stained knees were racing around inside and outside in their poofy dresses. Little boys, getting their dress pants dirty, played games in the backyard. Parents sat gossiping around polished white tables with wine glasses in their hands, the sun beating down on them. Today was particularly warm with a slight breeze, perfect weather for the family gathering. An array of birds were (1) perched on top of the white picket fence chirping. Evelyn Russell, who held this family gathering every year, was pacing back and forth, making sure that everything was in place.†¦show more content†¦Her eyes roamed the room and her eye suddenly caught the grandfather clock on the wall. It was a Russell family legacy. The clock had been passed down through many generations. The grandfather clock barely made a sound an d didn’t tell the correct time anymore, but the design was so (8) whimsical. The wood around the clock was a faded coppery color, that shined (9) resplendently when hit by the sunlight from a nearby window. The copper color of the wood complimented the golden clock that was (10) showcased in the glass. Around the clock itself there was embellishments of swirls and flowers that intertwined with each other beautifully. Unanticipatedly, the clock started to slightly shake. Brielle heard the small sound of the mechanics of the clock clinking together. Placing her cheap paper cup on the coffee table, she (11) deliberately walked over to clock, examining it closely. The shaking stopped almost instantly. Brielle began to saunter back to the couch but stopped when her mother came into the room. A group of (12) rousing children sped past Evelyn, knocking down a tray of drinks she had in her arms. (13) Defeated, she cursed under her breathe as she began to clean up the mess. All of the sudden, Evelyn was overcome with (14)anguish, a piece of glass had gotten caught in her hand. The children (15) scoffed at her, sticking out their tongues. â€Å"Don’t run!† Her (16) imperious requests were too late for the
