Team And Leadership Effectiveness In The Workplace

Team And Leadership Effectiveness In The Workplace Leadership is defined as the process of influencing the activities of an individual or a group in efforts toward goal achievement in a given situation. In essence, leadership involves accomplishing goals with and through people (Hersey and Blanchard, 1993). Leaders envisage the future; they motivate organisation members and impart values-whether they are concerned for honesty, hard work, quality and taking calculated risk or concern for customers and employees. It seems there is no common definition of leadership , perhaps it is because the leadership concept is complicated and fuzzy. According to Robert Tannenbaum, Irving R. Weschler and Fred Massarik leadership is defined as interpersonal influence exercised in a situation and directed, through the communication process, toward the attainment of a specialized goal or goals. Leadership is about showing the way, by going in advance, and influencing the behaviour of others. It refers to introducing new business behaviour, practices, o r technologies, which demonstrate that sustainable development is possible (Sommer, 2003) Todays business leaders have identified two important factors that could drive success in organisations of world class cadre- continually enhancing performance by becoming faster, better and more effective, and including all employees in Performance improvement can be achieved only by enhancing the processes within an organisation. Since the processes are created and operated by the people, the only way to enhance performance would be through people. Therefore continuous effective improvement depends on the capability of managers to guarantee that each and every one becomes involved in enhancing performance, work efficaciously in teams in order to analyse processes, and study problems to implement solutions. Leadership Under the leadership of Mr. Narayan Murthy, the ex-chairman of the Infosys, the company has ended up being one of the most successful IT companies in the world. Infosys Technologies Ltd is one of the leading IT companies In India and worldwide. It is now a global leader in the Next Generation of IT and Consulting. Starting in 1981, Infosys witnessed its corporate success in a short time. Although the company started functioning almost twenty five years ago, it is in the recent times that it experienced strong growth. Ever since it started the company has had a remarkable growth in terms of revenue. Revenue in 1994 was only US$9.5million but in 2005 Infosys revenue touched US$2billion which was only half this revenue in 2004. There is a saying that Great companies can neither be built nor their greatness sustained without great leaders, the above results clearly proves that Mr. Murthy is one such great leader who lead the company to the success path. According to the Hay group review, a global management consulting firm, of 1249 leaders from prominent organisations functioning in the Indian market, about 60% create a de-motivating climate and do not employ those who can lead. It also found only 18% develop an engaging climate that promotes high performance. So today it is so very much necessary for many organisations to create motivating climate and engage people who can lead effectively. The successful organisation has one major attribute that sets it apart from unsuccessful organisations: dynamic and effective leadership (Hersey and Blanchard, 1993). Infosys took an initiative in this direction and opened Infosys leadership institute where it intends to grow leaders. The Leadership development program at Infosys Leadership Institute targets to produce a collective pool of leaders and shape them to take on present and future challenges in business. The Infosys Leadership Institute offers a wide range of organisational and individual development sessions to expound business problems. At Infosys they believe that a good leader can be only one who uses all different styles of leadership with one of them usually dominating and a bad leader is one who sticks to one style. At Infosys it is not that only the top management gives suggestions to support its vision and manage agility, uncertainty and ambiguity at all circumstances. Courtesy: http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/swami_lalita-161501-infosys-leadership-ob-education-ppt-powerpoint/ The leadership believes in taking valuable suggestions from its young achievers in the company. The Chairman diagnosed that young achievers in the company were wavering to come forth with their ideas. These people had a great value to add to the company but could not give in to the discussions feeling in secured of infracting hierarchy. Mr. Murthy communicated to be open minded and encouraged the young achievers to speak. He found that the suggestions and thoughts given by them had a lot of substance and can significantly help the company. The leaders at Infosys are so very much adaptable, bothered significantly over the above issue they built a leadership institute where they can develop and groom leaders from its promising employees irrespective of the hierarchy and provide them the opportunity to help build the company. Today many organisations are facing talent problem, where people are being rushed into activities they are unaware of or assigned to jobs for which they have inadequate preparations. Due to the phenomenal growth of India in last 5 to 10 years people were getting promoted before their time and these people held a wrong perception of empowerment. Even though they had the authority, they lacked in terms of experience and credence to be true leaders. If organisations have to maintain conservative growth estimates, much of todays leaders need to motivate the employees who work for them. If not able to successfully motivate, it would be difficult to keep employees sticking around long enough to progress them into competent leaders. So it becomes very important to have motivating climate in any company in order to enhance its own performance. According to Hersey and Blanchard(1993), in leading or influencing there are three competencies of Leadership: Diagnosing-being able to understand the situation you are trying to influence, Adapting-being able to adapt your behaviour and other resources you have available to meet the contingencies of the situation, Communicating-being able to communicate in a way that people can easily understand and accept. The soul of leadership competencies in Infosys rest in their vision statement which reads as: We will be a globally respected corporation that provides best of breed business solutions, leveraging technology, delivered by best in Class people. To achieve their vision, leadership competencies have been marked along four dimensions: Work, people, technology and business. Each of these is further exaggerated into smaller functional terms in the graphic shown below. Courtesy: http://www.thehindu.com/businessline/praxis/pr0304/03040380.pdf The Infosys leadership institutes primary goal is to assist the company to counter the explicit challenges of now and in the future. They believe that by improving the quality of leadership they can handle its phenomenal growth, with stand the complexities of the market and swiftly changing environment, and through thought leadership they can develop higher customer value. Courtesy: http://www.thehindu.com/businessline/praxis/pr0304/03040380.pdf At Infosys in order to increase their quality of leadership they use a Nine pillar model of leadership development. At Infosys, for leadership development these nine pillars are functional elements. For the development of leadership competencies at discrete level each pillar has its own distinct importance. 360-degree appraisal: It is method of consistently collecting data about an individuals performance and potential from a broad range of co-workers. This may include the manager, direct reportees, peers and both internal and external customers. It is an organised method of gathering and processing data and gives the employee an opportunity to express on his valuable information. The response received from 360-degree feedback is used as a foundation to direct the person in gaining new skills and improving existing skills all arranged to the leadership competencies model. Development assignments: They are a traditional and powerful form of leadership development. Potential employees are allowed to have experience in various functions through Cross functional assignments and internal job rotations. Development assignments help an employee to gain practical leadership skills outside their zone of experience. Development relationships: Mentoring is viewed as a developmental relationship in the framework of leadership development. In order to transfer and share knowledge and experience, one-on-one relationships in work scenes are facilitated. This mentoring for leadership program is functional and learning from this course will be utilized to refine and broaden the element of leadership development throughout the organisation. Leadership skills training: It is a process by which individuals in the organisation go through a sequence of learning interventions on matter relevant to leadership. A Leaders teach series was formed in which the board of directors including the chairman, the Managing director, and the Chief Executive Officer hold a workshop with help of leadership institute faculty for the development of future leaders. Feedback Intensive program: These are comprehensive behavioural interventions based on informal and formal feedback taken from people that the individual interfaces with. These programs are structured in a way that individuals give and receive feedback in an environment that is non-threatening and could generate a workable plan for goal setting for progressive professional and personal development. Action Learning: It is a real time experience which is time based used to crack systematic, unresolved and real organisational problems. It is termed as a pragmatic process directed at producing a resolution a problem that has been identified by the organisation and a workable plan is designed for goal setting and strategies for progressive development to attain them. Systematic process Learn: It is an intervention that will enable individuals to view the organisation as system in whole which consists of many interacting sub systems. It is intended to yield plan for continuous advancement in systematic processes and details as to how a participant will initiate such an improvement. Community Empathy: The organisation holds a fundamental belief the social conscience requires to be nurtured and improved in each of its potential leaders. And the value of this community empathy aligns with the above fundamental belief. The Infosys leadership holds an ambition to opportunities for potential candidates on a regular structured basis to enrol themselves in cause outside the company that contribute to good of the less fortunate. Infosys culture workshop: These workshops are intended to help individuals to understand the purpose processes and the core values in ambience of leadership development. These workshops have been designed to in a way that allows expansive interaction among the individuals leading to strengthening of the Infosys culture and ensuring enough authorization to assure adherence to the culture of the company. Leadership traits: According to Warren Bennis, leaders should empower their organisations to develop an environment where people feel important, competence and learning matter, people are part of the team, and work is interesting. Leaders should also be creating an environment where standard matters and dedication to work enthuses effort. According to Huczynski and Buchanan, a charismatic leader holds the following characteristics: Visioning- providing a luxurious and extraordinary total dining experience that delights customers, empowering- giving staff a voice, showing confidence and trust, allowing staff to influence what they do, experiencing high standards,energizing- communicating vision, making staff feel part of something special, aiming for perfection, excitement, joy, passion in the work. The transactional leader a leader who treats relationships with followers in terms of an exchange, giving followers what they want in return for what the leaders desires, following prescribed tasks to pursue established goals( Huczynski and Buchanan, 2007) Transformational leader- a leader who treats relationships with followers in terms of motivation and commitment influencing and inspiring followers to give more than mere compliance to improve organizational performance( Huczynski and Buchanan, 2007) Traits that are found most often to be feature of successful leaders as per Yukl are: Assertive, cooperative, dependable, decisive, dominant, persistent, energetic, self-confident, willingness to assume responsibility, tolerant to stress, alert to social environment, adaptable to situations, achievement oriented and ambitious. Empirical research studies suggest that leadership is a dynamic process, varying from situation to situation with changes in the leader, the followers and the situation. Because of this, while there may be helping or hindering traits in a given situation, there is no universal set of traits that will ensure leadership success (Hersey and Blanchard, 1993) Team Work: Teams that can bring and stick employees together to investigate problems to implement solutions would be one of the best ways to increase productivity and product quality. And teams which can continually improve can be considered as powerful tools any organisation can use to ensure employees remain firmly focussed on meeting business goals and customer needs. Employers emphasis the significance of employees working as a team and apprise for people who hold the quality to work in such a way. Team work comes into consideration when there is a need to utilize different strengths of employees and goodness of cooperation. Principles of team work: Understanding the team is very important, as a team member he/she should know the following things: Roles and responsibilities operations of a team advantages of working as a team for individuals(motivation, job satisfaction, pride, external qualification) advantages of working as a team for the organisation (improved results due to increases in quality and productivity) Probable disadvantages of teams(Conflicts, domination) Working relations: Characteristics of a good team member Different working relationship problems with members and colleagues in other groups Team and leadership activities in order to improve team work success Team activities: The team should contribute to constant improvement activities, brainstorm activities, performance reviews, team briefings, problem resolution sessions, question and answer sessions, and team and individual appraisals. The team should be reading and contribute to team boards. The team should use internal network systems or e-mail to support communication. The team must keep displays and visuals updated. Leadership activities: Setting team objectives and goals, action planning, and recognising achievable business targets. Distribution and monitoring of team members, deciding on employee role and responsibilities, team work-load prioritization to make sure targets are met efficiently and effectively. Supervising the team performance against the objectives and goals, managing ineffective and poor performance, encouraging and motivating team members, developing a cohesive work-team through teambuilding approaches, analysis the training needs, creation of skills matrix, mentoring, team and individual appraisals, communication and consultation with management, peers and sub-ordinates and subject specialists, successfully managing conflict and tensions, grievance and disciplinary procedures. Conclusion: This paper shows the leadership in Infosys, one of the most successful IT Company in the world. Mr. Narayan Murthy, the Ex-chairman of the company has been a true leader and shows what a brilliant visionary he is. Under his leadership the company has grown tremendously within twenty five years of its existence. At Infosys they believed that a good leader can only be one who uses all different styles of leadership with one of them usually dominating. At Infosys, in order to improve the quality of leadership a leadership development program was initiated by opening the Infosys Leadership institute. This leadership Institute offers a wide range of organisational and individual development sessions to expound business problems and targets to produce a collective pool of leaders and shape them to take on present and future challenges in business. In order to achieve their vision, leadership competencies are marked along four dimensions of Work, people, technology and business. The Infosys believe that by improving the quality of leadership they can handle its phenomenal growth, with stand the complexities of the market and swiftly changing environment, and through thought leadership they can develop higher customer value. The Nine Pillar model of leadership development is used to improve the quality of leadership and as a consultant I would suggest the other company to use the Nine Pillar model as a basis to develop a similar model to improve their quality of leadership. About the team work it is now evident that it comes into consideration when there is a need to virtue of cooperation and use various strengths of employees. By understanding the principles of team work, and the team and leadership activities to be carried out properly could result in improvement in teamwork success.

John Watson Essay -- Psychology, Behaviorism

Watson’s life history John Broadus Watson was a famous American psychologist who lived between the year 1878 and 1958. He was born in a place called Greenville in South Carolina. John’s father was called Pickens and Emma was his mother and he was their fourth born child. The family was not well of financially they just lived in poverty. In spite of the poverty that engulfed the family, John’s father turned to be a habitual drunkard who cared less for his family. However, Emma John’s mother was a devoted religious woman who struggled to take care of the children with less support from her husband (Watson, 1999). In 1891, Pickens John’s father left the family and disappeared since he was somebody who engaged in extra marital affairs with other women a situation which even strained their marriage with his wife Emma and the relationship with his children. When Pickens had disappeared from home, John became a naughty boy and he became so confused in life due to lack of the full p arental care of both parents. He became defiant at school even he did not want to listen to the advice from his teachers. He bullied his fellow students and involved in other antisocial behaviors which were quite unacceptable at the school environment, further more he became violent and even rebelled his mother. John’s life started to turn around by the help of his teacher called Gordon Moore at the time he was a student at Furman University. He later on developed a positive attitude towards academic work since he realized that at least he can now contribute to the community regardless of the poverty state of his family. His academic performance was quite brilliant and he was able to succeed and secure a chance in the University of Chicago to pursue his m... ...eover, critics argue that animals and people can easily adapt behaviors when new information is introduced even if the previous pattern of behavior has been already established by reinforcement. In conclusion, the theory of behaviorism is based on observable behaviors for easier quantification and data collection. Effective techniques such behavior intervention and discrete trial training originates from this school of thought. The approaches are very essential in altering the maladaptive behaviors in adults and even children (Cherry, 2011). Therefore, Professor John Watson is greatly saluted for his tremendous contribution to modern psychology since his work was a big transition from the work of earlier scholars to the modern scholars. His life history is quite inspiring and serves as a role model to the young scholars who are interested in studying psychology.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Video Games Essay

Everybody knows something about Super Mario or Pac-Man. These two and some others have started a new trend which called ‘playing video games’. Most people have spent their free time with playing video games and it still keeps going in that way. But for years people asking this question. ‘Do video games are bad or good? ‘ One of the advantages of playing video games is improving your vocabulary. Most games are online now and you can’t do anything without making a contact with other players. These players are live in another countries and the only way to communicate with them is using a common language. 90% this is English. I’m playing video games and i can say that video games really improves your vocabulary skills. When you don’t understand a word in a game you have to check dictionary to understand the meaning of it. To be honest,I have learnt a lot of words from video games. Actually more than my English lesson in highschool. Another advantage of playing video games is improving computer skills. Sometimes you have to set some options to play your game better. While doing that you learn about your computer’s hardware too. For example:there is a part in options called ‘graphics’. You have to use a better graphic card to see better images. To get a better graphic card, first you have to know how we can compare them and by that we learn more and more about our computer’s system. But of course there are disadvantages too. One of the is it’s harmful for your eyes and other body parts. I know there are some games which you can play by Nintendo Wii or PlayStation Move. They give you some kind of camera and your moves can be seen in game. But it’s unnecessary to do something like that. There are lots of sports which you can do outside. You can go on a jogging or play basketball, tennis etc. You don’t have to do this by playing video games. Another disadvantage is that, sometimes children access games which are not proper to their age and that is harmful for children. But I think the problem is not games are too reachable. The problem is parents are don’t care enough about their children. What I mean is you can’t ban something global but you can limit them. And it’s not so hard to do it. Maybe you can limit the internet or you can use some kind of programme like Family Security System. But these are the things which you can made with using a computer. Also you can stop your children with spend more time with them. Then they can feel video games are not the most important thing in the world. In conclusion there are bad and good sides of video games. But some other things have good and bad effects too like TV or food. If you don’t become and addict I think all of them are useful. You have to control yourself and your time to don’t become and addict. All is up to you.

The Family Gathering At The Russell Family - 889 Words

It was the Russell family gathering. It happened every summer on July 18, like clockwork. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and even second or third cousins showed up. Little girls with grass-stained knees were racing around inside and outside in their poofy dresses. Little boys, getting their dress pants dirty, played games in the backyard. Parents sat gossiping around polished white tables with wine glasses in their hands, the sun beating down on them. Today was particularly warm with a slight breeze, perfect weather for the family gathering. An array of birds were (1) perched on top of the white picket fence chirping. Evelyn Russell, who held this family gathering every year, was pacing back and forth, making sure that everything was in place.†¦show more content†¦Her eyes roamed the room and her eye suddenly caught the grandfather clock on the wall. It was a Russell family legacy. The clock had been passed down through many generations. The grandfather clock barely made a sound an d didn’t tell the correct time anymore, but the design was so (8) whimsical. The wood around the clock was a faded coppery color, that shined (9) resplendently when hit by the sunlight from a nearby window. The copper color of the wood complimented the golden clock that was (10) showcased in the glass. Around the clock itself there was embellishments of swirls and flowers that intertwined with each other beautifully. Unanticipatedly, the clock started to slightly shake. Brielle heard the small sound of the mechanics of the clock clinking together. Placing her cheap paper cup on the coffee table, she (11) deliberately walked over to clock, examining it closely. The shaking stopped almost instantly. Brielle began to saunter back to the couch but stopped when her mother came into the room. A group of (12) rousing children sped past Evelyn, knocking down a tray of drinks she had in her arms. (13) Defeated, she cursed under her breathe as she began to clean up the mess. All of the sudden, Evelyn was overcome with (14)anguish, a piece of glass had gotten caught in her hand. The children (15) scoffed at her, sticking out their tongues. â€Å"Don’t run!† Her (16) imperious requests were too late for the

Security Testing from Agile Perspective - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1484 Downloads: 8 Date added: 2017/09/25 Category Advertising Essay Type Argumentative essay Tags: Development Essay Did you like this example? Security testing from perspective of scrum development Rudra Prasad Tripathy Ph. D. scholar, Utkal university Technical architect, JDA india software(P) Ltd. Hyderabad,India [emailprotected] com Ranjit Kumar Panda Senior Engineer, MindTree Limited Bangalore, India panda. [emailprotected] com Abstract— We are trying to show how security testing plays predominant role in secured development and through agile methodology-particularly scrum is a suitable development process. Keywords-scrum;security testing. 1. Introduction Application security is in attention for last few years where security no more allures to network security and transcen. Security testing is also crux of secured development though it’s not getting its due importance. In this paper we would discuss issues involved in security testing in traditional software development lifecycle approach like waterfall and would compare with scrum methodology, which is a agile methodology to see how it would smoothen few issues and would facilitate security testing. We would take cross-side scripting as the example to illustrate the study. 1. 1What is security testing? Application security would basically deals with the situation to try to break the software as what an attacker would do. This is different from traditional testing because of following idiosyncratic features. a. Traditional testing doesn’t deal with what happens if it fails, where as security testing objective to break the system and would play a role of antagonist. Hence it requires dexterity and experience to draw suitable test cases apart from tools and frameworks.. b. This would be part of risk management and hence need to reckon the cost involved. We may need to define adequate security [1] parlance to application’s business domain and value proposition aimed at. For example definition of adequate security a online credit card application and online healthcare system would differ. Hence prioritiz ation and budgeting of resources are few factors need to be considered. c. Testing of different possible vulnerabilities [2]. 1. 2Security testing approaches. Currently application security testing has been done as a white box testing, may be with help of few tools like static analysis tools to study the vulnerability. Apart from that non functional testing has been conducted to see chance of failures against vicarious attack of adversary. 1. 3Cross-Site Scripting Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities were verified as executing code on the web application. This occurs when dynamically generated web pages display user input, such as login information, that is not properly validated, allowing an attacker to embed malicious scripts into the generated page and then execute the script on the machine of any user that views the site. XSS can generally be subdivided into two categories-stored and reflected attacks. Stored attacks are something like form stored on the target server, such as in a database, or via a submission to a bulletin board or visitor log. Reflected attacks, on the other hand, come from somewhere else. This happens when user input from a web client is immediately included via server-side scripts in a dynamically generated web page. Insufficient filtering of client-supplied data that is returned to web users by the web application is the major cause. In many cases, the client-supplied data is being used in the HTTP headers, which could be exploited by using carriage return-linefeed sequence-an attacker can add HTTP headers to the response and completely write the body of the HTTP request. 2. MOTIVATION In one of the web application, an XSS was found through use of third party tool. This was a critical defect. Design had been made and after implementation code had been tested by security compliance team. Cross-site scripting carried out on websites were roughly 80% of all security vulnerabilities documented by Symantec as of 2007. A ful l security review usually involves more than just seeking out XSS vulnerabilities. it also involves overall threat modeling, testing for different threats like overflows, information disclosure, error handling, SQL injection, authentication, and authorization bugs. The nice thing is that doing a thorough job in any one area often overlaps with another. Like, while testing for XSS vulnerabilities, you will very often identify error handling and information disclosure problems as well. Though automated tool like webinspect were available, we did some manual testing through a tool called Paros [8] for HTTP traffic interception. Intercepting the client GET and POST requests is extremely important. One could circumvent any sort of client-side JavaScript input validation code that may have been pushed down. A simple test will be changing a get parameter in the request. Let the URL is as below https://www. yoursite. com/index. html? param=test. One would modify the URL like https://w ww. yoursite. com/index. html? name=alert(XSS), and subsequently, if a popup opens up saying XSS then this parameter is open to XSS vulnerable. Paros Proxy is used to intercept the request parameter. Using this tool we will inject some malicious javascript code into the cookies, header or form parameters. If the code will be executed while the response is displayed in the browser, the application is vulnerable to XSS. 2. 1 Security testing models There are many methodologies proposed by SEI [5] like SSE-CMM, TSM for secured development. Following are the steps for secured development life cycle [4] followed at Microsoft. Stage 0: Education and Awareness Stage 1: Project Inception Stage 2: Define and Follow Design Best Practices Stage 3: Product Risk Assessment Stage 4: Risk Analysis Stage 5: Creating Security Documents, Tools, and Best Practices for Customers Stage 6: Secure Coding Policies Stage 7: Secure Testing Policies Stage 8: The Security Push Stage 9: The Final Security Re view Stage 10: Security Response Planning Stage 11: Product Release Stage 12: Security Response Execution This best suits to development practice like waterfall model. 2.. 2 Techniques for security testing Though security testing requires some level of craftsmanship, still we could derive some common techniques for analysis. We can broadly divide insecurities into two categories –insecurity by design and insecurity by implementation [7]. Analyses of bugs are another way of identifying the problem and deriving the solution, to some extent general use of this could be ascribes to already available taxonomies. We could see how following agile practice would better tackle the problems and techniques could be applied in a better way. 3. ACHIEVING AGILITY Many enterprises like Microsoft [9], IBM have presented skewed steps of normal life cycle to achieve agility Followings are mapping between steps provided for agile development features of scrum process. In above mentioned w orks authors try to explain from waterfall perspective of agile. In the following points, we are trying to show how agile is inherently suitable for secured development and particularly for security testing. . Short development period A typical development period is 2-3 weeks which means at end of every sprint one would test the software. In various papers, limitation of seven plus minus two has been advocated. Duration of 2-3 week development would make it easier for a security tester to identify impacted area, hence would help in fuzz testing. ii. Incremental development As the development is incremental, work like threat modeling. It also help in planning when to implement requirement exceptions and hence security review. iii. Cross functional team As there is paucity of security experts, one would conduct sprints specific to implement security features. As output application size is incremental developer would find it easy to do code review and rectify cryptographic error cod e. iv. Defining done Though 2-3 weeks is a small amount of time, we cannot really achieve everything. But we could define what we mean by done. We may define identifying issues as done only, may be through static analysis tool. There is a flexibility to inject short sprints in between where we could pick up security implementation instead of product features. Hence agile is a natural choice for secured development. v. No Documentation Maintaining document for threat modeling and other security test cases would be redundant and overhead maintaining documents for satisfying process requirement would not be required. Hence from process perspective we don’t need to do agile, secured testing can be agile. 4. CONCLUSION There is a gap in understanding of scrum from quality perspective. We tried to bridge the gap and to make development process more secured. Further empirical studies and experience papers would help to buttress use of agile for development of secured applicati ons and products. Prosecution to the full extent of the law is necessary to decrease the perception that violence against nurses is acceptable. Greater support from public officials and management is necessary to combat this growing problem, with the instit ution of specific policies and procedures. Movement toward a nonviolent workplace will result in higher nurse satisfaction and retention. To effectively establish and address the issue, more research, support from hospital management, and stronger legislation is necessary. References Violence in the Emergency Care Setting. Environmental Crisis Essay Example For Students

Environmental Crisis Essay We Have An Environmental Crisis Because We Have A People Crisis A Crisis ofPopulation Growth, of Wasteful Consumption of Resources, and A Crisis of Apathyand Inaction. An environmental crisis is an emergency concerned with the place in which everyhuman lives the environment. A people crisis is an emergency with thecommunity that inhabits the world environment. A crisis of population growth isa turning point where the environment can no longer sustain the amounts ofpeople which it contains. A crisis of apathy and inaction is one where thehuman race cannot be motivated to solve the problems with the environment thatthey themselves have created. The claim that we have an environmental crisis because we have a people crisisis valid because our environmental problems have largely resulted frompopulation growth, which has lead to apathy and inaction with regard to thewasteful consumption of resources. Examples are the desertification of the Sahelin Africa, the one child policy in China and the mis-management of our oceans. The Sahel is a strip of land that extends for more than 6000 kilometres acrossthe southern edge of the Sahara desert. It stretches from Senegal andMauritania in the west to Ethiopia and Somalia in the east. These nations areamong the worlds poorest. The area is one of social and biophysical crisis because of the way thepopulation are forced to live; they are destroying the productivity of the land. The alarming rate of population growth and ever increasing pressure on the landhave initiated an expansion of desert-like conditions into the Sahel a processcalled desertification. Traditionally, the people of the drier, northern Sahel followed a nomadiclifestyle, constantly moving their herds of cattle, sheep and goats over largeareas in the search for suitable grazing land. These movements preventedovergrazing and lessened the likelihood of land degradation. With increasinghuman numbers, the increased intensity of land use, and the harvesting of treesand scrub for fuel wood threaten to overwhelm the regions fragile environmentand result in permanent ecological damage and declining standard of living. During the 20th century 3.9 billion people have been added to the worldspopulation. This is an increase of 244%. Rapid growth occurred because of the improvementof living conditions, reduced child mortality rates and increased lifeexpectancy. The population of undeveloped nations will continue to grow in the foreseeablefuture because at present 45% of the population is under 15 years of age. In the North the population growth is slowing down because children areconsidered an expense. In Italy, Germany and Austria, the growth rate isnegative. The slowdown in population growth is a result of the lower fertility rates thathave accompanied improvements in the quality of peoples lives and theincreasing use of contraceptives throughout the South. As peoples economicwell-being improves they tend to have less children. Future efforts to control population growth will depend on the Norths capacityto share the worlds resources and the ability of poor nations to improve thequality of life experienced by their people. At the beginning of this century there were some 426 million people living inChina. This has resulted in a country that has endured the demographic effectsof devastating famines, wars, and epidemics for millennia; the population growthand change that occurred in the 20th century is unprecedented. By the year 2000, the Chinese population is officially projected to top the 1.3billion mark. About two-thirds of this 900 million increase was added within thelast 50 years, as mortality was reduced amid high fertility rates. .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241 , .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241 .postImageUrl , .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241 , .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241:hover , .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241:visited , .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241:active { border:0!important; } .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241:active , .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241 .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub9a04bc0a444777a8d84d20a93b7c241:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Rose For Emily By Faulkner EssayThe Chinese government has been moved by this demographic affluence to curbfertility. Chinas strategic demographic initiatives (SDI) were contrived out ofthis need. The government installed numerous measures for curbing fertility, embracing delayed marriage, sterilisation, all known contraceptive methods, andabortion. Exhortations, campaigns, financial and material incentives, andnumerous other sanctions were used to implement the policies. All these effortswere, at first, to redirect young couples to have fewer offspring and, later, toheed the one-child-per-couple, or minimal reproduction, policy. The purpose of this call for minimal reproduction was to keep the populationfrom exceeding 1.2 billion by the year 2000. The scheme has proved problematicinside the country and controversial abroad for practical, political, ethical, and religious reasons. The massive gain in population in recent decades has intensified olddifficulties in the countrys effort to raise living standards, and has ignitednew economic, environmental, and social concerns within the nations borders. The major issues range from Chinas population carrying capacity, unemploymentand underemployment in the countryside, surging urbanisation, and spreading airand water pollution to mass illiteracy and education in relation to development. SDI itself has added such new concerns as the effect of son preference on femaleinfanticide and the sex ratio, the impact of a fast fertility reduction onpopulation aging, and the implications of exempting the countrys 55 minoritygroups from the nations fertility control measures. The global significance of Chinas demographics is likewise enormous. Whateverthe size of Chinas population is at the dawn of the 21st century it is certainto account for twenty percent of the worlds projected population. Chinasindustrialisation, modernisation, expanding use of natural resources, and risingconsumption will increasingly disrupt the earths ecosystem. It has been thought that the worlds seas would provide an inexhaustible supplyof fish, however, this has been found to be untrue. Since the 1950s there hasbeen a rapid increase in the amount of fish caught and most traditional foodfishes are now over-exploited and stocks are falling. Overfishing is partly the result of the belief that the worlds oceans arecommon property, and belong to everyone. They have been seen as a resource opento everyone with no one responsible for their protection. This has led toexploitation and the Tragedy of the Commons. This tragedy occurs when aresource is freely available to everyone; everyone uses the resource to themaximum so that the resource is eventually destroyed. Each year the cities of the world flush enough oil down their storm waterdrains and sewers into the sea to fill three Exxon Valdez supertankers. Largeareas of seas such as the Baltic and Mediterranean are now dead from pollution. Fishing is the most traditional activity in Australian waters . Today a fleet of10,000 boats lands a harvest of 200,000 tonnes of fish, prawns lobsters adshellfish worth $1.2 billion a year. Being long-established, the fishing industry was also first to encounter thebiological limits of local waters: of our top 10 fisheries, five are now classedas over-exploited and five fully exploited. Now, if a particular fishery dropsto unsustainable levels, catch limits may be imposed. In greatest difficultiesare southern bluefin tuna, southern shark and gemfish. New fishery prospects arefew and costly to develop, most being in deep water. Related problems in fishing include the extent to which trawling damages thesea-bottom and changes the populations of sea creatures, and the growingconfrontation between inshore fishers and recreational anglers, which many nowpredict will end in bans on professional fishing. The ever increasing need for food due to population growth, has led to widerareas of the oceans being fished. Increasingly, fishing is taking place far outto sea, beyond the continental shelf in the waters of the continental slopes andocean depths. Large fishing nations such as Japan, the USSR and the USA havefleets of trawlers that operate in these areas using the latest technology whichfurther deplete ocean stocks. .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393 , .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393 .postImageUrl , .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393 , .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393:hover , .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393:visited , .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393:active { border:0!important; } .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393:active , .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393 .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u68e68c0332c36ff696440caca30c8393:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Why Do We Need The Covenants? EssayThese modern methods exploit the ocean resources by catching too much fish andby not being selective in what fish they catch before it is too late to throwthem back. This will eventually deplete worlds fish supplies and if trawlercompanies do not start to limit catches. The major issue concerned with the downfall of our oceans is that marine life isvital to the food chain which includes our survival in the future. There are many other long term issues involved within environmental crisis. Some of these are air pollution, garbage, logging and erosion. Often governmentsoverlook these problems when creating new policies because they seem to be moreconcerned with immediate economic considerations. Globally, there is anindifference towards environmental issues and a lack of concern for the well-being of the world environment today. These examples have illustrated thatpeople put their own personal needs before the survival of the earth. Thedeveloped nations of the earth need to take a larger responsibility for theenvironment, as they have been educated to the ill effects of pollution andover-population and they have only themselves to blame for environmentaldestruction. As for the people in the nations of the South, population growthneeds to be slowed possibly by educating women about contraception, economicincentives, people interested in careers, less infant mortality and increasingthe cost of children. Apathy and inaction can be reversed by concerted and effective Governmentpolicies that encourage personal, social and economic benefits. Apathy must beresisted if our planet is to survive.
